Stop for Safety – Traffic and Campus Alerts

MassDOT Traffic Circle: Traffic Interruptions at First and North in Pittsfield.

You may have noticed construction markings, signs, pole additions, and barriers being placed by Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) over the last few weeks on North and First streets in Pittsfield. This is the beginning of a major road construction project designed to improve the city intersections and traffic signals near the Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) main entrance. As a result, traffic to the hospital and nearby Berkshire Health buildings may be slowed or re-directed.

We have been notified this project is ahead of schedule and major traffic changes will begin March 18.

Please Note: All BMC and Medical Arts Complex (MAC) parking areas remain open during construction.

Reminder Free Shuttle & Valet Service: We provide free, round trip shuttle service from the MAC parking lot to the rear entrance of the MAC building as well as free valet service from both BMC and the MAC entrances.

As updates on traffic patterns and access to our buildings and grounds become available, we will keep you, and the community informed. Please refer to the BerkshireHealthSystems.org for additional updates.

Medical Arts Complex (MAC) Project Updates

Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) has announced plans for work on the mechanical infrastructure of the Medical Arts Complex (MAC) to ensure the building’s longstanding sustainability as a center for outpatient care. This work is a demonstration of BHS’s continued investment in the health of Berkshire County, as part of its vision to be the region’s trusted healthcare partner and community advocate for improving overall quality of life.

You will still be able to visit the MAC for your outpatient care needs; however, during the construction process, there will be changes in how you access the building.

How to enter the MAC:

Construction at the MAC will begin on September 5, 2023, following the Labor Day Holiday and is expected to last for 12 months. Work on the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, (HVAC) systems will impact the way that people enter the building.

The front, upper-level entrance of the MAC Building that is typically accessed from the parking lot will be closed to all patients, visitors, and staff. All patients, visitors, and staff should plan to access the building from the rear (West) using either the ground floor entrance or the second-floor walkway from the parking garage.   

Accessibility:

The patient parking lot at the front of the building will remain open with a modified driveway entrance. We will offer valet parking, extensive shuttle service to the rear entrance, and a modified sidewalk to allow access to the rear of the building to help patients and visitors adapt to the entry changes. Additional accessible parking will also be available near the rear entrance.

FREE Shuttle Service:
Free and continuous, wheelchair accessible shuttle service is provided to and from the Upper Parking Lot.
  • Monday-Friday: 6:30AM through 5:00PM
  • Saturday: 6:30AM through 12:00PM
Please ask the Valet at the rear entrance to call for your return shuttle service to the Upper Parking Lot.

While construction is underway, the front, upper-level entrance to the building will be closed, but patient care areas will not be disrupted. Shuttle services, clearly designated walking paths, and accessible parking will be available near the rear, lower-level entrance of the building. Please allow extra time when arriving for an appointment at the MAC.

Signage and timely communications support will assist in directing staff and patients throughout the whole construction process. Construction will have an impact on the building’s entrance for our employees and patients and on employee parking.
