Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a buildup of fluid in part of the body, usually an arm or leg. The network of vessels called the “lymphatic system” removes clear fluid called “lymph” from the tissues. The lymph nodes are part of this system. The lymphatic system is like the system of blood vessels. But instead of blood, the lymphatic system carries lymph, which also holds infection-fighting cells.

Lymphedema happens when the flow of lymph gets backed up and can cause swelling in a limb (arm or leg), aching pain, a tight or heavy feeling in the affected limb, and trouble moving the affected limb.

There is no cure. But there are treatments, like our Lymphedema Clinic, that can help reduce the swelling and bring more comfort.

Lymphedema Clinic

Our Lymphedema Clinic use the Vodder method of Manual Lymph Drainage and Combined Decongestive Therapy. We provide on-going therapy to prevent the long-term build up of fluid in the extremities. The main goal of treatment is for you to learn how to manage lymphedema independently.

It is a four-part treatment program:

  1. Manual Lymph Drainage is a repetitive sequential massage that reduces swelling by stimulating the lymph vessels to draw in more of the lymph fluid. When necessary, flow of lymph is redirected into functioning lymph vessels.
  2. Compression bandages are used to prevent re-flow of lymph fluid between sessions. The bandages also serve to increase lymph flow by providing resistance to muscle activity, creating a pump-like action on lymph vessels. Daytime use of bandages is replaced by custom-fit garments once maximum reduction of swelling is achieved.
  3. Exercise instructions which help increase lymph flow is given early in the program. Daily exercising is an important part of the program.
  4. Skin care instructions. Excellent nail care and skin cleansing with antibacterial washes and neutral pH balanced soap helps to end bacterial and fungal growth and minimize the possibility of cellulitis and other infections.

Depending on the severity of the lymphedema, Manual Lymph Drainage is performed 4-5 times per week. Sessions are 60 – 90 minutes, and treatment typically ranges from 4-8 weeks. To support the results achieved during active treatment, a commitment to lifestyle changes including exercise, good nutrition, skin care, and on-going use of compression garments with periodic bandaging is essential. Follow-up visits are recommended. A doctor’s prescription for combined decongestive therapy including a medical diagnosis is needed for treatment.
