Background

At Berkshire Health Systems (BHS), we are proud to be the leading provider of comprehensive healthcare services for residents and visitors of Berkshire County. BHS supports 24-hour emergency care at our two inpatient acute care facilities, Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) in Pittsfield and Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington and continues working toward reopening North Adams Regional Hospital through a Critical Access Hospital designation in 2024, pending Determination of Need approval.

BHS is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and uses this commitment as a guide for all aspects of our work. As a system, we are committed to advancing health equity in and out of the four walls of our facilities. To do this, we define DEI and health equity not as standalone initiatives, but as the lens that we can and must apply to everything we do.

At Berkshire Health Systems, we know that overall wellness is the result of healthy families, healthy environments, and healthy communities, not just excellent medical care. Therefore, we support our patients beyond the hospital, clinic, or medical office. We recognize that each of our patients has unique needs and challenges. We strive to make each experience with BHS one that is welcoming, personalized, and convenient for the patient. We make connections and promote community services that give patients the tools to live healthier lives.

Year-Over-Year Planning and Programming

In the upcoming years, we are focused on building an infrastructure for health equity success. The infrastructure we are building is not a “quick fix,” but instead will impact the health and wellness of our region for generations to come. Addressing systemic racism and bias that have been perpetuated for generations through the community requires conscious planning and thoughtful educational resources and discussions, all of which we know won’t be completed overnight.

To achieve our goal of creating an equitable and inclusive healthcare environment, we are focused on:

    • Creating a localized index of equity standards, internal benchmarks, and goals

    • Engaging with historically underrepresented populations in health education

    • Reviewing and adapting all patient care materials, processes, and environments to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible

    • Further embedding inclusive policies, guidelines, and procedures into orientation training and job performance expectations

At BHS, we focus on caring for the “whole patient.” This means thinking about traditional health factors like patient vitals, medical history, and medications, but it also means thinking about the patient as an individual. We know that a patient’s background and individual characteristics can impact their clinical outcomes – for example, if they don’t have access to healthy food, struggle to keep housing, or feel discriminated against for any facet of their identity, patients are probably not their healthiest selves. We take the time to understand all these factors in order to design an individualized care plan tailored to each patient’s specific needs.

Community Engagement

Member and community voices are key sources that we routinely tap to guide our health equity planning and implementation. We are committed to transparency and keeping lines of communication open for our staff and members of our community.

In his role as BHS’s DEI Officer, Charles Redd, MS, RN, works closely with leaders across the system to apply the DEI lens to everything we do. At the beginning of his tenure, Charles convened a Health Equity Committee with representation from a broad range of departments, facilities, and staff roles across BHS. This group is responsible for guiding our system’s DEI efforts and making recommendations to senior leadership. Our system relies on the Berkshire Health Systems Health Equity Committee (BHEC) to support Charles in developing and moving forward the BHS DEI Strategic Plan, with a shared goal to advance DEI across the system and community.

As a crucial element of our DEI work, Charles and senior leaders across the organization regularly participate in community events and discussions. In 2024, leaders across our organization engaged in more than 30 events and discussions focused on listening and learning from community members’ recommendations for creating more inclusive care environments, combatting both systemic disparities and blatant racism in our county, and addressing social determinants of health.
