Dr. Mark Kryskow is a Board-Certified General Surgeon specializing in Surgical Critical Care. He received his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed his residency in General Surgery right here in the Berkshires at Berkshire Medical Center, and completed his fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Utah.
At Berkshire Health Systems, Dr. Kryskow does general surgeries including Amputations, Hernia Repair, and surgeries for Biliary and Gallbladder Disorders. Dr. Kryskow specializes in the surgical repair of traumatic and complex chest wall injuries like rib fractures and costal margin injuries and ruptures. Dr. Kryskow also specializes in treating Functional Chest Wall Syndromes like Intercostal Neuralgia, Inerchondral Joint Pain, and other lower chest wall, rib, and abdominal disorders.
Dr. Kryskow is a pioneer in treating Interchondral Subluxation, also known as Slipping Rib Syndrome (SRS). This is a painful condition that leads to sharp pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen, radiating pain throughout the upper body, tenderness along the lower ribs, and other pain from general movements. Patients from around the country travel to Pittsfield to seek his care and expertise.
Dr. Kryskow’s work in SRS also lends itself to treating other traumatic chest and abdominal injuries and managing follow-up care for those complex, blunt force injuries.
In his spare time, Dr. Kryskow is an avid outdoorsman: he climbs mountains, skis in the winter, and mountain bikes in the summer. He enjoys doing these activities with his wife and children, and his ability to connect with many of his patients who may have suffered an injury during a similar daring activity only improves his practice and patient care.
Dr. Kryskow is involved in the Chest Wall Injury Society where he is spearheading research on slipping rib syndrome and other painful chest wall disorders. Dr. Kryskow is the founder of the Rural Mountain Trauma System (RMTS) which is a group of mountain first responders, evacuation personnel, and trauma systems to collaborate, share, learn, and improve care in future emergencies and traumas. RMTS is no longer only in Massachusetts; expansion of this collaboration is active in other resort areas in New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York with others reaching out from as far south as Arkansas.
Berkshire Health Systems is proud to have trained Dr. Kryskow and is even more proud to have him caring for our community and beyond.
