Same Day Discharge at the Crane Center
Knee Replacement surgery has seen significant improvements over the past decade, with less invasive techniques, faster healing times, and for qualified patients, the convenience ability to go home the day of surgery. That option has been expanded at Berkshire Health Systems, where the expert surgeons at Berkshire Orthopaedic Associates now offer same day discharge for total knee replacement at the Crane Center for Ambulatory Surgery, located across the street from Berkshire Medical Center (BMC).
For patients who meet the criteria for same day discharge, the Crane Center is an ideal place for their replacement surgery and can be a much better experience for the patient.
Dr. Kevin Mitts, the BOA surgeon who performs the total knee replacements at the Crane Center, says, “Same-day discharge for knee replacement result from improvements in surgical technique, anesthesia, pain control, and care pathways. The main goals are better recovery, fewer complications, and lower healthcare costs. We now commonly perform these procedures with minimally invasive approaches, short-acting spinal or regional anesthesia and peripheral nerve blocks. These techniques reduce tissue trauma, blood loss, and postoperative sedation, allowing patients to mobilize sooner and meet discharge criteria within hours.”
The Crane Center had its first same-day discharge knee replacement patient in June. While BMC’s main operating rooms will continue to be used for same-day discharge for some knee replacements, offering the Crane Center to the mix expands choices for patients.
The Total Joint Replacement Program at Berkshire Medical Center has earned successive Joint Commission Certification in both Total Hip and Knee Replacement since 2015. In 2025, BMC earned Advanced Certification in Hip and Knee Replacement from the Joint Commission. The same program and care delivered at BMC is now available at the Crane Center.
