Berkshire Medical Center's Department of pharmacy is staffed by Oncology Pharmacists who are experts in the medications used to treat cancer, as well as the medications used to manage symptoms and side effects.
The compounding suite includes a state-of-the-art pharmacy that is in compliance with state and federal regulations. Our pharmacists are key members of the patient’s care team, providing advanced pharmacy expertise.
The pharmacy staff provides an array of personalized care for patients through the following programs:
Specialty Pharmacy: Many cancer patients discover they are essentially on their own in dealing with pharmacies, and their insurance companies to obtain some of the more complex, higher-cost prescription medications necessary for their treatment.
At the BMC Cancer Center, our patients may receive financial counseling and assistance to obtain these drugs at a lower cost and more quickly and conveniently. The BMC Community Pharmacy, a Specialty Pharmacy, does all of the ordering and coordinating. A dedicated pharmacy technician serves as a direct liaison to the patient. The prescriptions can be either delivered to the patient’s home or readied for pick-up at the BMC Cancer Center or at the Berkshire Community Pharmacy, located at BMC’s main hospital location.
Oral Chemotherapy Management Program: More than 25% of cancer therapy is by oral chemotherapy that patients self-administer at home. Studies indicate that compliance and adherence can be low. Patients unknowingly jeopardize the success of their care by delaying the start of taking the medications, by skipping doses when they feel sick, or by trying to stretch out the prescription to make the expensive therapy last longer. To advance better patient care, the BMC Cancer Center monitors exactly when patients begin taking their prescriptions at home, and stay in close contact with patients and their physicians to address any concerns before they complicate treatment.
