Berkshire Medical Center Honored Among Nation’s Top Hospitals: Hospital Value Index™ Recognizes BMC with Top 100 Hospital and Best in Value™ Awards
PITTSFIELD, MA — Further enhancing its national recognition for clinical excellence, Berkshire Medical Center has been honored with a 2009-2010 Hospital Value Index™: Best in Value™ Award as well as being ranked as a Top 100 HospitalTM, as a result of a nationwide study conducted by Data Advantage, LLC, the nation’s leader in measuring healthcare value. BMC ranked among the top tier of all hospitals nationwide, achieving high marks in quality, affordability and efficiency and patient satisfaction.
Specifically, the Hospital Value Index™ recognized BMC as a Top 100 Hospital nationally, with BMC ranked 86th out of 4,500 hospitals across the US, ranked #1 in Massachusetts and ranked #1 in all of New England, recipient of a Superior Quality Merit Award and Best in Value honors.
“These national achievements for Berkshire Medical Center are a testament to the dedication of our medical staff, employees, trustees and leadership team, and reinforce our commitment to providing the highest level of quality care for our patients,” said David Phelps, President and CEO of Berkshire Health Systems. “Recognition as a Top 100 Hospital™ and our many other achievements in the Hospital Value Index™ validates that the care that residents of Berkshire County receive at Berkshire Medical Center is exceptional, even when compared to larger and more prestigious medical centers across the country.”
The Hospital Value Index™ is the first and only performance indicator to focus on the value hospitals provide to their community and utilizes the latest publicly available data, including Hospital Compare from July 2009, to recognize these accomplishments. This analysis is also based on the concept of value from the consumer perspective and consistent with the methodology being proposed in many of the healthcare reform proposals in regard to assessing the value of services provided to patients.
“Value is increasingly important to patients and consumers who decide which hospital they will access for care,” said Hal Andrews, CEO of Data Advantage. “The Hospital Value Index™ is the first award to recognize those hospitals providing exceptional value of care to their communities, and Berkshire Medical Center has achieved great results.”
The Hospital Value Index™ pulled data from approximately 4,500 general acute-care hospitals, serving approximately 30.1 million consumers. It defines a hospital’s “value” by its success in four critical areas:
•Quality, including CMS’s Core Measures, patient safety and readmission rates;
•Efficiency, including the relative measure of the cost to the hospital for providing services
•Affordability, a relative comparison of prices charged for inpatient and outpatient services; and
•Patient satisfaction as measured by HCAHPS.

Berkshire Medical Center is ranked among the top 5% of hospitals in the nation for overall clinical excellence by HealthGrades and is a recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. BMC is one of only 13 hospitals in the US to achieve Triple Gold recognition in the American Heart Association’s Get with the GuidelinesSM program for the care of patients with coronary artery disease, stroke and heart failure. BMC has been recognized with eight consecutive Performance Achievement awards for outstanding performance in the care of patients with coronary artery disease, and is the only hospital in the nation so honored eight years running. BMC was also the first hospital in the United States to be honored with awards for stroke and heart failure, holding five consecutive yearly Performance Achievement awards for outstanding care of stroke patients and four consecutive yearly Performance Achievement awards for care of patients with heart failure. In addition, BMC has been recognized as a Top Performer in a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)/Premier healthcare alliance project that rewards hospitals for delivering high quality care. In the fourth year of the six year project, BMC recently received awards for Top Performance and Attainment in the clinical areas of Hip and Knee Replacement and Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Attainment in the treatment of Heart Failure and Pneumonia. BMC consistently participates in national quality measurement programs such as HQID, which is a voluntary program for US hospitals. BMC was the only participating hospital in Massachusetts to achieve two or more top performance awards and one of only 53 participating hospitals nationwide to achieve that distinction in the fourth year of the project.
