Berkshire Medical Center traces its history back to the original House of Mercy hospital, which was opened in Pittsfield 150 years ago, and was later renamed Pittsfield General Hospital. The name was changed again in 1968 upon the merger of Pittsfield General and the former St. Luke's Hospital, becoming Berkshire Medical Center, and in 1996, the former Hillcrest Hospital merged with BMC.
