Reiki is a healing therapy based on the principle that practitioners can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, activating the body’s natural healing processes and restoring physical and emotional well-being. The therapy helps relieve the stress, pain, nausea, sleeplessness and other effects of chronic illness and necessary treatments such as chemotherapy.
For cancer patients seeking to tap into the human body’s natural ability for self-healing and stress management, practitioners of this ancient Japanese technique are now available at the BMC Cancer Center to provide treatments.
A Reiki practitioner lightly places his or her hands on or close to the person, who can either be lying on a bed or sitting in a chair for the brief 10 to 20 minute treatments.
Energy therapies such as Reiki are being offered increasingly at leading hospitals and cancer centers throughout the US, and clinical research is under way to better understand how well it works to improve symptoms and promotes healing. One such study, which was done here in Berkshire County from March of 2014 through September of 2015, showed a statistically significant reduction in pain, nausea and anxiety among the more than 300 patients participating.
