Oncology Nursing at the BMC Cancer Center is very much a team approach which includes the patient, family, physicians and nurses, along with other services offered at the center to support patients through the multitude of triumphs and challenges.
Oncology nurses have specialized training and most have achieved their oncology nursing certification. They provide education on medications, administer chemotherapy and answer calls from patients to provide advice, support, and suggestions on how to care for themselves at home. They serve as an important conduit to the physicians to manage side effects and send prescriptions to the pharmacy.
Our oncology nurses view their profession as one of the most rewarding, intellectually stimulating and humbling career one could ever hope to experience. Providing care to a cancer patient at the most vulnerable time of their life is truly an honor to them.
They use song, humor and laughter, along with gentle touch and compassionate care, to guide a cancer patient through their journey. They celebrate the victories and are saddened by the defeats. Oncology nurses support their patients as well as each other to weather the storms and appreciate life to its fullest.
