Emergency Department at BMC

Nationally Recognized Emergency Care. Right Around the Corner.

Emergencies happen when you least expect them—but at Berkshire Medical Center, you can always count on the fastest, highest level of care available. The BMC Emergency Department is ranked among the top 5% in the nation by HealthGrades® and is a recipient of their 2012 Emergency Medicine Excellence Award™, given to only three hospitals in Massachusetts. This recognition is a testament to the emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants and nurses who staff our emergency room 24/7, 365 days a year, providing lifesaving care for heart attack, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other serious conditions.

In addition to the main Emergency Room, our care extends to North Adams with the BMC Satellite Emergency Facility, open around-the-clock for critical and non-critical emergent needs. All together, we provide emergency services for more than 58,000 patients each year throughout Northern and Southern Berkshire.

If you’re experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately or head straight to your nearest emergency room:

Why Choose Our Emergency Care?

Top-of-the-Line Technology for Fast and Convenient Care

Berkshire Medical Center recently completed a major expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department, including a new, larger waiting area, additional treatment rooms and a dedicated 16-slide CT scanner to provide rapid imaging services for patients with life-threatening conditions.

Individual treatment rooms are all equipped with heart monitors, and our physicians have access to BMC's Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for real-time reading of diagnostic studies. In addition, BMC's electronic health record is integrated with the hospital's acute care settings, so that all important medical information is available to caregivers. For your convenience, all prescriptions are provided through electronic medication dispensing machines.

Skilled and Compassionate Emergency Team

While our ER is distinguished by state-of-the-art facilities and technology, our medical staff is what truly distinguishes our emergency care. In addition to their advanced training and talent, these physicians and nurses deliver the highest standards of compassionate care, helping patients and their loved ones cope with the stress of a medical emergency. They also also interact with several Pittsfield-area agencies, including emergency medical services providers, and local fire and police departments, to ensure our communities receive the most efficient, coordinated care in the event of a large scale emergency.

Ready the Second Stroke Strikes

When it comes to stroke, getting fast, coordinated care can be the difference between life and death, total independence and long-term disability. As the first hospital in the U.S. to receive the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines Stroke Performance Achievement Award, BMC meets and exceeds national standards for providing that critical care. Through early intervention, rehabilitation and follow-up care, we are committed to helping patients and their families overcome stroke and resume their lives to the greatest extent possible. We have the proven protocols in place to save lives and improve long-term outcomes, using advanced heart diagnostic technology and the most current, evidence-based treatments. Berkshire Medical Center has been verified as a Level III Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, which recognizes our ability to provide immediate, specialized care to critically ill or injured patients. Emergency Department staff are members of the trauma team, providing early care and resuscitation, if needed. Also, our nurses are all certified in trauma care and advanced cardiac life support.
