Cancer rehabilitation is the process by which skilled rehab professionals (physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists) assist the cancer patient to obtain their maximal physical and vocational function within the limits created by the disease and its resulting treatment.
Those undergoing or those who have completed cancer treatment, may experience the following impairments:• Decreased Strength, Range of Motion (ROM), and Joint Mobility
• Pain
• Fatigue
• Peripheral Neuropathy
• Deconditioning
• Postural Dysfunction
• Gait Deviations
• Balance Dysfunction and Instability
• Soft Tissue Restrictions/Fibrosis
Physical therapy services are offered at BMC’s Center for Rehabilitation’s Cancer Center Gym located at 165 Tor Court, Pittsfield, MA. A physical therapist will evaluate and assess a variety of physical impairments related to cancer treatment, and develop an individualized treatment strategy to build up strength, endurance, balance, mobility, etc. to maximize the cancer patient’s functional independence.
