Two National Healthcare Organizations Recognize Fairview Hospital’s Quality

GREAT BARRINGTON, MASS: – For the fourth year in a row, The Leapfrog Group has named Fairview Hospital to its annual list of Top Hospitals. This award recognition showcases Fairview Hospital’s commitment to Leapfrog’s vision of providing the safest, highest quality health care for consumers and purchasers alike.

Fairview Hospital was one of 98 Top Hospitals recognized and selected from hospitals participating in The Leapfrog Group’s annual survey. The list includes 24 Top Rural Hospitals, 62 Top Urban Hospitals and 12 Top Children’s Hospitals.

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Top Hospitals have lower infection rates, better outcomes, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions. By achieving Top Hospital status, Fairview Hospital has proven it prioritizes the safety of its patients, is committed to transparency and provides exemplary care for families and patients in the southern Berkshire tri-state community. I congratulate the board, staff, and clinicians of Fairview Hospital whose efforts achieved these results.”

The selection is based on the results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use and management structures established to prevent errors. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including survival rates for high-risk procedures and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors.

The Top Hospital award is given to urban, rural and children's hospitals that publicly report their performance through the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey and meet the high standards defined in each year's Top Hospitals Methodology.

Named a Five-Star Hospital by CMS

Fairview Hospital also received the coveted 5-star ranking from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in their Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems surveys taken in 2014. Of 3500 hospitals reviewed, only 251 or 7% received this recognition nationally.

The summary rating includes an average of hospitals' performance on each of the 11 publicly reported measures from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. The HCAHPS survey evaluates patients' experiences at the facilities. The survey asks patients about factors such as the responsiveness of hospital staff to their needs, the quality of care transitions and how well information about medications is communicated. It also asks about cleanliness and quietness of the facility and whether or not the patient would recommend it to others. Fairview received recognition for patient responses gathered between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014.

According to Fairview leaders, the recognition reflects an organization-wide commitment to patient care. “Fairview has made tremendous progress and is committed to provide high quality health care that earns the support and trust of our community. As part of Berkshire Health Systems, Fairview has been able to offer impressive medical resources in a rural, community hospital setting. We applaud our staff for their commitment to our patients and to our community. Achieving this distinction drives us to continually strive for higher quality and service and as advances in medicine evolve, Fairview is part of a strong regional network of care,” said Doreen Hutchinson, Vice President of Operations and Chief Nurse at Fairview Hospital.
