BMC Achieves Top 5% in Nation for Clinical Excellence
Berkshire Medical Center Achieves the 2013 Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™:Distinction puts Berkshire Medical Center in Top Five Percent of Hospitals Nationwide

PITTSFIELD, MA – Berkshire Medical Center today announced that it has received the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ from Healthgrades, a leading provider of comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. This prestigious distinction places Berkshire Medical Center among the top five percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for clinical performance.

“Berkshire Medical Center is one of 262 hospitals named this year that stand out above the rest for their overall clinical care across a broad spectrum of care,” said Evan Marks, Executive Vice President, Informatics and Strategy for HealthGrades. “While many hospitals have specific areas of expertise and high-quality outcomes in certain areas, these hospitals exhibit comprehensive high-quality care across multiple clinical specialties.”

“National honors like these are important, but not just for awards. For BMC, these recognitions represent years of commitment to excellence on the part of our physicians, clinicians and staff,” said David E. Phelps, President & CEO, Berkshire Health Systems. “For patients we serve, these recognitions represent objective confirmation that we are continuing to offer exceptional quality and they can feel confident that they are receiving the highest quality care, close to home.”

“We’re fortunate to be part of a health system that places quality and patient safety at the forefront of every decision and is willing to make the investments to ensure support for staff and the best outcomes for patients,” said Diane P. Kelly, RN, BMC Chief Operating Officer. “Our success comes from everyone working together and committed to doing the right thing for every patient, every time.”

From 2009 through 2011, HealthGrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence as a group, had an overall 30.9 percent lower risk adjusted mortality rate as compared to other hospitals that did not achieve the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award (across 18 common inpatient conditions and procedures). In recent years, while there has been considerable improvement in hospital quality, disparities among hospitals persist, and hospital quality can vary significantly even within local service areas.
“Berkshire has been recognized as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence by HealthGrades. This is an outstanding accomplishment as they have performed in the top 5% of all hospitals in the U.S when it comes to mortality and complication rates,” said Arshad Rahim, MD, Vice President of Accelerated Clinical Excellence for HealthGrades. “As a physician, I know firsthand the level of dedication and the kind of collaboration it takes to achieve these results year after year. The citizens of Western Massachusetts are fortunate to have access to such high quality medical care in their region.”
“Today, consumers have unprecedented access to information on hospital performance as it relates to specific conditions and procedures so that they can make more informed decisions about who to see and where to go for care,” said Marks. “The Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence enables hospitals to communicate their commitment to providing outstanding patient care and to show their continued efforts to improve clinical outcomes.”
