Jewish Women’s Foundation Supports BMC Cancer Patient Transportation Needs

PITTSFIELD, MA – The Jewish Women’s Foundation of Berkshire County is partnering with Berkshire Medical Center and the American Cancer Society to help provide transportation for cancer patients who require assistance in obtaining treatment. The Jewish Women’s Foundation has allocated $2,500 from its 2011 fundraising efforts to the Care Navigation Program at BMC for use when patients are in need of transportation assistance and their family and friends are unable to provide it. In addition, the Foundation is working with the American Cancer Society to recruit volunteers to help drive cancer patients to and from their chemotherapy, radiation or other treatments. The volunteers would use their own vehicles and can work around their own schedules.

“An important aspect of treating any medical condition is getting the patient to his or her appointment, which is not always easy for the patient or family,” said Jane Glasser, Chair of the Jewish Women’s Foundation. “Providing transportation for those who lack the resources fulfills the Jewish value of caring for those in need, as well as the Talmudic imperative of ‘whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world.’ We are proud to help support the patients in our community who are in need of assistance.”

The Jewish Women’s Foundation, under the auspices of the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires, is dedicated to “repairing the world” by strengthening family and community.

Community members interested in volunteering to drive local cancer patients to and from their treatment appointments can call Pam Austin, American Cancer Society, 413-493-2134 or email her at
