Senior Health Day Event to Feature Falls Prevention, Health Screenings and Education

PITTSFIELD, MA – Berkshire Medical Center, the Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association and the Berkshire Chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association are presenting a Senior Health Day event and Health Fair, highlighting falls prevention and featuring numerous health screenings and health education programs. The Senior Health Day program is free and open to all, and especially relevant to seniors and adult children of senior parents.

The program will be held on Sunday, January 23rd from 1 to 4 pm at the Berkshire Hills Country Club. From 1 to 2 pm, a presentation will be held on falls prevention, featuring Dr. Joseph Pfeifer, Medical Director of the BMC Trauma Service, Tracy DiSilva, RN, BMC Trauma Service Coordinator and Diane Barrett, PT, Director of Rehabilitation Services for the Berkshire VNA. From 2 to 4 pm, a Health Fair will be held.

Fall-related injuries are the most common injury that the BMC Trauma Service encounters, with more than 4,500 Emergency Department visits last year alone. One in ten falls among older adults result in serious injury, such as hip fracture. Most fall-related injuries are preventable. Health screenings such as vision exams, lifestyle changes and environmental modifications are just a few of the strategies to help reduce the incidence of falls. The Senior Health Day program will provide information on ways to stay healthy and safe at home.

The Health Fair, following the lecture on falls prevention, will include blood pressure and diabetes screenings, balance testing, health information on hearing, vision, breast health, emergency medical services, bladder dysfunction, cancer prevention, occupational and physical therapy, foot care and safe driving, and booths with information on Link to Life, United Cerebral Palsy, the Pittsfield Senior Center, Pittsfield Fire Department, Elder Services, RSVP and other local service providers.
