Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission are considered without regard to race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability or handicap.

Educational Requirements for Admission to the BMC School of Medical Technology:

  • Three years (90 semester hours) of collegiate training in a college or university approved by a recognized regional accrediting agency; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

Minimum Requirements for Admission:

  • Biological Science (16 semester hours)
  • Microbiology, Immunology, Anatomy/Physiology, and Genetics/Molecular Biology must be included
  • Chemistry (16 semester hours)
  • Organic and/or Biochemistry must be included
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics is required

Additional Courses Recommended:
Computer and Management courses

Berkshire Medical Center Admission Requirements:

  • Student must pass a pre-admission physical, including random urine drug screening
  • Provide immunization records
  • Submit to a background investigation following acceptance into the clinical internship

Essential Functions:

  • Successfully pass a pre-admission physical examination or screening examination as specified by Berkshire Medical Center.
  • Possess visual acuity to discriminate color reactions (i.e. special stains, cell morphology, dip-stick reactions, etc.), to perform microscopic analysis, and to read charts, graphs, and printouts (or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately so the requirements can be met).
  • Possess sufficient motor skills in order to perform delicate tasks such as: calibration and maintenance of laboratory instruments; precise sample procedures; pipetting of samples; use of computer work stations; phlebotomy with safety and proficiency; and to grasp, hold, transport, and utilize specimens, reagents, hazardous chemicals, and equipment in a safe manner as needed to perform laboratory testing.
  • Have the ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Have enough strength to lift weights up to 20 pounds from the floor to waist level.
  • Possess communication skills (direct and telephone) to interact with patients and other members of the healthcare team. 
  • Possess hearing acuity so as to be able to communicate with others, including the use of telephone and monitoring of equipment (or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately so the requirements can be met).
  • Possess the ability to work in an environment with potentially infectious materials (HIV, Hepatitis, TB, etc.) and toxic or irritating chemicals. (May be exposed to noise and temperature variations - this includes possible sensitization to latex from prolonged wearing of gloves.)
  • Possess the ability to sit or stand in places for extended periods of time.
  • Have the ability to reach laboratory bench tops and shelves, patients lying in hospital beds, or patients seated in specimen collection furniture.        
  • Demonstrate sufficient psychological stability and maturity to effectively problem solve and to perform effectively in stressful situations. Must be able to recognize emergency situations and take appropriate action. The student must possess the mental health required for full utilization of his/her intellectual abilities.
