Dr. Mark Pettus Returns to the Berkshires: Appointed to Two Key BHS Leadership Roles
PITTSFIELD, MA - Berkshire Health Systems has announced that Mark Pettus, MD, FACP, has returned to the medical staff of Berkshire Medical Center and has been named to two key leadership positions. Dr. Pettus will serve as Director of Medical Education and Medical Director of Wellness and Population Health.
Dr. Pettus has most recently been the Chief of Medicine at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY, a position he held from 2010 to earlier this year, and prior to that had been associated with BMC for over 20 years, beginning in 1988.
“The knowledge and expertise that Dr. Pettus brings to these important roles within Berkshire Health Systems will contribute greatly to our mission of improving the health of all in our community,” said David Phelps, President and Chief Executive Officer of BHS. “Mark shares our vision that Berkshire Health Systems, through its innovative Wellness Programs and partnerships such as our recently announced venture with the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program can and will have a dramatic impact on the health and well-being of our community. His leadership will be vital to our continued success.”
As Director of Medical Education, Dr. Pettus will provide leadership support for all undergraduate and graduate medical education programs at Berkshire Medical Center. In his role as Medical Director of Wellness and Population Health, he will lead the continuing expansion of Wellness services and programs in the community.
“I believe Berkshire County could and should be the healthiest community anywhere,” said Dr. Pettus. “Right now Berkshire County is not very healthy, despite having a first class health system and a stunning cadre of natural resources and community capital. Leveraging partnerships like the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program with Berkshire Health Systems existing services and clinical excellence is a huge step in bringing proven, science-based wellness models to those we serve. Inspiring more effective self-care and wellness stewardship is vital for true population health, and we are uniquely positioned to achieve success.”
Dr. Pettus previously served as Medical Director of the Neighborhood Health Center at BMC, Medical Director of the Kripalu Institute for Integrated Health, BMC’s Chief of Staff, Associate Program Director for the BMC Internal Medicine Residency and Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine.
Active in community affairs, he is past President of the Board of Directors for the Berkshire County Association for Retarded Citizens and a current member of the board, serves on the Board of Deacons for the South Congregational Church in Pittsfield and is a member of the Hospice Advisory Board of Hospice Care of the Berkshires. He is also the acclaimed author of “The Savvy Patient: A Consumer’s Guide to More Effective Navigation of Our Health Care System” and “It’s All in Your Head: Change Your Mind, Change Your Health.”
