Room charges vary based on patient acuity, nurse to patient ratios, and various monitoring and equipment needs. Since different hospitals may not include the same service or supply items in their room charge, you may see a variance in charges from hospital to hospital. Berkshire Medical Center and Fairview Hospital have elected to include many commonly used supplies and procedures in the daily room charge. This reduces charging for additional supplies or services but may give the appearance that our room rate is higher than other hospitals that continue to separately charge for individual items.
At BMC and FVH, daily room and board charges include general duty nursing care, standard bed/mattress, routine personal convenience/hygiene items, most routine "floor stock" items that would generally be available to all patients, local phone calls, television, dietary and housekeeping.
Items or services that are special ordered by physicians are typically not included in the daily room charge. Most treatments or services provided by ancillary department staff — such as respiratory therapy, laboratory, rehabilitation, etc. — are separate distinct services that we are required to bill separately.
