Stroke Program at BMC
Berkshire Medical Center’s award-winning Stroke Program focuses on immediate and accurate diagnosis – most frequently in the Emergency Department – where physicians, nurses and staff work on the front lines of a highly-skilled Stroke Team and have immediate access to state-of-the-art diagnostic technology. A BMC neurologist is immediately available whenever stroke is suspected, as well as BMC-based neurosurgeons, if necessary. BMC has onsite stroke experts available 24-hours a day and is staffed and equipped to not only diagnose and treat stroke patients, but to also see them through rehabilitation and all stages of recovery.
Patients are admitted to our Stroke Unit on the second floor of the hospital, where all caregivers have specialized training in stroke care. Patients who have received t-PA will spend their first day in the Intensive Care Unit before going to the Stroke Unit. Our patients receive the most advanced treatment that is based on scientific evidence to prevent complications and reduce further risk. BMC’s Stroke Services Clinical Coordinator oversees every facet of patient care, using systems integrated throughout the hospital to promote the most successful outcomes. Quality improvement in stroke care is an ongoing priority at BMC.
Included in our Stroke Team are the families and friends of our patients, who will also play key roles in their recovery and rehabilitation.
As soon as possible - usually starting within 24 hours of admission - stroke patients begin comprehensive rehabilitation. This begins bedside on the Stroke Unit with many patients continuing rehabilitation at the inpatient rehabilitation unit on the second floor of the hospital. As the patient improves, rehabilitation can continue at the outpatient Center for Rehabilitation at BMC in the Medical Arts Building adjacent to the hospital. Our comprehensive rehabilitation services include physical, occupational, speech therapy and much more, provided by skilled therapists who are dedicated to helping each patient regain their highest potential and resume their lives.
