David E. Henner, DO
Division Chief, Nephrology and Medical Director of BMC Kidney Disease & Hypertension Center
"My goal is to improve the health of our community, and provide the best care possible to people suffering from kidney disease."
Born in New City, Rockland County, New York, Dr. David Henner fondly recalls playing with a Fisher-Price doctor's kit at home at age 4 while his parents called him, "Dr. David." At age 10, young David was hospitalized with a rare kidney infection which, in the coming years, would inspire him to become a Nephrologist.
In pursuit of his dream, Dr. Henner graduated from State University of New York at Buffalo with a B.A. in Biological Sciences, and received his Medical Degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He furthered his education by completing his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem, PA. He then completed his fellowship in Nephrology at NYU (New York University) Medical Center, in New York City.
Dr. Henner was practicing Nephrology in Philadelphia when he heard of an opening in the Nephrology Division at BMC. Recalling fond memories of visiting Tanglewood in his youth, he was quick to apply-and our hospital is a better place for it.
"In Philadelphia, much of my time and effort in practice was spent competing with other Nephrology groups" recalls Dr. Henner, "whereas my primary focus was always on the patients. When I heard they were looking for a Nephrologist at BMC, I jumped on the opportunity."
"This Dialysis Unit is phenomenal," furthers the passionate doctor. "We're a big family working together-nurses, social workers, technicians and dietitians-creating a dynamic team approach. All of us put the patients first."
With Dr. Henner at the helm, The Kidney Disease and Hypertension Center has expanded its reach, with a new dialysis unit in Great Barrington, serving Fairview Hospital. Dr. Henner is also introducing SLED (Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis) for critically ill patients in need of dialysis, and he spends a great amount of time educating patients and physicians in his tireless quest to lower kidney disease in our community.
Dr. Henner takes full advantage of living in the Berkshires, and enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, and all of the culture the Berkshires has to offer. He is also a martial artist, with many years of training in kickboxing, various styles of Karate and Kung-Fu, as well as stick fighting and self-defense. He is an avid supporter of New York professional teams--Yankees, Giants, and Knicks, and he is a "deadhead", being a huge fan of The Grateful Dead. He lives in Pittsfield with his lovely wife, Nadine, and their children Alex, and twins, Madeline and Gabriel.
