Berkshire North WIC often serves as a pilot site to test out new WIC systems or projects. Most recently we were selected to pilot the Touching Hearts, Touching Minds Program, which involved using emotion-based materials and incorporated group appointments to give parents an opportunity to share ideas about nutrition and parenting with each other.
WIC is currently working with the EPA and Operation Better Start to promote and support parents in keeping the home and car smoke-free. To date, 194 of our prenatal women signed a pledge promising to not allow smoking in their homes and cars.
We are currently working with the Operation Better Start Program, which is working under grants with CET and the EPA and was able to staff our offices with nurses. The Operation Better Start Nurses see all of our prenatal women and educate them on minimizing exposure to toxins and improving indoor air quality.
We are also working closely with the Tobacco Treatment Program, which received a grant in 2007 to help more prenatal women with smoking cessation.
