Ellen Fabino's Story
After nearly 30 years of professionally tending indoor plants at many of Pittsfield’s downtown office buildings, it was Ellen Fabino’s turn for some care and attention.
When it came time to get serious treatment for her left hip, inflamed by years of osteoarthritis, she knew right where to go. BMC was ranked among the best hospitals in the nation for hip replacement and other types of orthopaedic surgery.
“Some people would ask me if I planned to go to Boston or somewhere else and I’d get so upset,” Ellen said. “Why would I need to do that when I can get the best care anywhere right here at home?”
It took one visit with Dr. Kevin Mitts at Berkshire Orthopaedic Associates to know she had the right surgeon for the job. “I connected with him right away,” she said. “He was so professional and personable and made me feel very comfortable. He explained to me very calmly and clearly what the whole process was going to be.”
Ellen’s surgery was in late January, and she credits a long list of caregivers – from the surgical staff, to the recovery room, to the floor nurses, to the physical therapists and the Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association – for the dramatic relief she now feels.
“They restored my mobility and my independence,” said Ellen, “and they did it in such an encouraging and comforting way.”
By the start of spring, she was already back to work on her own, moving plants, watering them and keeping them healthy, hearty and upright – just like her.
