Cardiology - Early Intervention Program

The Early Intervention Program at Berkshire Medical Center is a medically monitored fitness program located in a comfortable and safe setting where we create individualized exercise and health education for people who wish to reduce their risk of heart attack or heart disease.

This comprehensive program provides the tools, guidance and motivation to help people make life-long behavioral changes to promote and improve their health. In addition to exercise and education, the Early Intervention Program also focuses on monitoring and controlling such cardiac risk factors as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, elevated cholesterol/lipids and stress.

Who can participate?
Anyone with cardiac risk factors who has the approval of their primary care physician or cardiologist.

How does the Early Intervention Program begin?
First step is an individual assessment that will enable us to know you better. The assessment will include an overview of your health, your risk factors, and your personal health goals. We will also discuss your work and home activity, nutrition and weight goals.

What is the exercise program like?
After the initial assessment, we will design and guide you through an individualized exercise program for the first six weeks. During each session, your progress will be monitored by our professional staff. You will have access to various pieces of equipment designed to improve your functional capacity. You are encouraged to participate in the program on a regular basis and may come as often as five times a week.

What about education?
Participants are provided with individual education and are encouraged to attend appropriate focus groups for additional support and education. Written hand-out materials, hands-on demonstrations and a lending library (videos and current health literature) supplement the formal group sessions.

Nutritional assessments are also provided as part of the individual assessment. Our dietician will review your dietary intake and provide you with individualized recommendations to help you meet your nutrition goals.
