Not too long ago, patients with abnormal heart rhythms often required sophisticated tests and procedures at distant cities with major heart centers. In July 2011, BHS advanced its commitment to the electrophysiology program with the completion of a new, state-of-the-art electrophysiology laboratory (EP lab). The Cardiac Electrophysiology program at BHS is led by Teresa Menendez, MD, a highly trained and experienced specialist in Electrophysiology care.
EP studies and ablation procedures allow electrophysiologists to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms. In essence, an EP study reveals the full scope of the heart's electrical system and detects problems with the electrical signaling pathways that can cause a variety of arrhythmias. In most cases, the abnormalities can be treated with an ablation procedure during the same EP study that provides the diagnosis.
